Screening of The Punk Singer for Flatpack Festival

punksingerWe’re delighted to promote a screening of the documentary on Kathleen Hanna, ‘The Punk Singer’ at The Electric Cinema as part of the Flatpack Festival.

Catapulted around the stage with righteous fury and charisma to burn, it’s not hard to see how Kathleen Hanna became a focus and figurehead for the riot-grrl movement of the early 90s.

Leaving behind a turbulent childhood, she started out as a spoken-word performer in Olympia, Washington and then decided that if she was going to make a real impact she needed to join a band.

One of the best things about Sini Anderson’s portrait is seeing the different forms that Hanna’s creativity takes, from Bikini Kill right up to the point in 2005 when being misdiagnosed with Lyme disease forced her to pull the plug on electroclash trio Le Tigre. Exhilarating and moving in equal parts.

Grab a drink afterwards at Cherry Reds on John Bright Street, where they will be playing appropriate tunes.

£7.50 entry.

Capsule and Milque & Muhle Showcase

TheExWe’re delighted to announce a collaboration with Capsule on their forthcoming gig headlining the Ex, on 18th April at the Hare and Hounds. With Capsule curating the first room featuring the Ex, Health and Efficiency and Rattle, we will be curating the second with Ghold, Mob Rules, Sump and Bayonnebleeder.

Since emerging in 1979, Dutch anarcho-punk band THE EX have embarked on a series of adventurous collaborations, making their musical style impossible to confine to any one genre. Beginning in the 80s The Ex partnered with jazz musicians and an Iraqi-Kurdish band. Later, in the 90s the group found a myriad of partners from varied musical and non-musical backgrounds including Kamagurka, Tom Cora, Sonic Youth, Han Bennink, Jan Mulder, Shellac and Wolter Wierbos.

“They are the most interesting musical unit in the world today…Go and see the Ex and you will hear rhythms you have never heard before…a sweaty seething party, an uplifting, joyful celebration.” – The Quietus

RATTLE
If the idea of a band consisting of just 2 drummers brings to mind a hippy bongo nightmare then you’ve obviously never heard RATTLE. Comprising of 2 of Nottingham’s most unique and recognisable drummers (Theresa Wrigley of Fists and Katharine Brown of KOGUMAZA) and aided by Kogumaza’s Mark Spivey they create a hypnotic and danceable music form that recalls This Heat or ESG even whilst remaining completely their own.

HEALTH & EFFICIENCY
Drawing influence and inspiration from a heterogeneous selection of art and music H&E formed in 2009. They combine elements of punk-rock, no-wave, free jazz, psych-folk, minimalist composition, and improvisation into a dynamic balance that sounds spontaneous and harmonious in its execution.

GHOLD
With a heavy bass line and percussive drums, this sludge rock duo pay homage to the early days of Sludge with bands like the Melvins, Karp and Godheadsilo.

MOB RULES
‘Cesstone music to try the patience of the Hardcore’, MOB RULES are arguably one of best bands on the UK Hardcore scene at the moment, Leeds anger-fuelled Powerviolence at its best. Formed in 2008, this four-piece are practically Leeds’ answer to Black Flag.

SUMP
Formed in 2008, SUMP is a Yorkshire two-piece consisting of George Proctor (guitar) and Gareth Howells (drums and vocals). Sump is a glorious fusion of Black Metal and Punk, this isn’t the first time the two have come together, yet somehow Sump achieve a unique and exciting sound.

BAYONNEBLEEDER
This will be the second show from local Hardcore outfit BAYONNEBLEEDER, who have spent over a year refining their tight and rapid sound; They take influence from bands such as Rorschach, Septic Death and His Hero Is Gone.

+ DJ SETS FROM LUKE YOUNGER & CHRIS BRESS

Tickets include entry to both stages and are available to buy at Milque and Muhle or online at the Ticketsellers for £10.00:

Perspex Flesh/ DiE/ Bayonnebleeder

Untitled-2Held at Muthers studio on 15th March, we’ll be presenting Hardcore Punk band from Leeds, Perspex Flesh (ex members of Braindead and Closure). With a debut LP coming out shortly on Static Shock label, there’s a growing following for this band, who sound like a mix between Deathreat and Born Against.

Supporting will be Leeds/London’s DiE, who have already released an EP available to buy; we reckon its one of the best singles released in 2013. These guys have a strong Boston Hardcore sound, think DYS or SSD.

Local Hardcore Bayonnebleeder will be playing their awaited debut show. Largely influenced by Rorschach and His Hero Is Gone, expect heavy and rapid.

Things will kick off from around 8pm.

Screening of Lindsay Anderson's IF.... (1968)

if.psdWe’re screening the great British classic, as always on an original 16mm print.

Filmed around the time of the May 1968 events in France, Lindsay Anderson’s If… is a story of revolution led by pupil Mick Travis, set in an old established private school in England. This X certificate became famous for its savagery and associations with the Counterculture of the 1960′s.

The feature will be introduced by a series of shorts starting from around 8pm.

£3 on door.

Screening of Roman Polanski's The Tenant (1976)

Untitled-4A screening of an original 16mm print of Roman Polanski’s Psychological horror.

Polish bureaucrat Trelkovsky rents a Parisian apartment previously occupied by Egyptologist, Simone Choule who he soon finds out had committed suicide.
